Wow, Kathy, thanks! Very interesting stuff. I've been witness to a few situations that could be attributed to Munchausen by Internet.

Of course, now I'm examining my own behavior to see if I'm a little too much of an attention hound. I don't try to create or enhance bad experiences to get sympathy or attention, but I do have a tendency to dominate conversations (or at the very least steer them so I can make a joke).

You called?

I do not believe that the most recent edition of the DSM-IV has Munchausen-by-Internet as a disorder separate from the "classic" Munchausen disorder (which is technically called "Factitious Disorder"). However, my DSM-IV is at home and a definitive answer will have to wait until I'm back home.

Alli "not just clueless, but bookless as well" son

ETA: Kathy's info is great! But seems to be from a source external to the DSM-IV, unless I am misreading it. Munchausen-by-Internet may be one of those disorders that gets added to the next DSM-IV, or it may simply get classified as a variant of Factitious Disorder.

No, it's not from DSM-IV. The author is a psychiatrist who specializes in Munchausen disorders. The article is from a peer reviewed journal, so I felt comfortable using it.

I was fascinated to read there is an actual clinical term for the syndrome. I have thought for a while that it wasn't all that uncommon, but an actual diagnosis.....

This is my one and only post to this thread, by the way. I seldom read this forum, preferring to stick with the more political threads (and the photos and military). I don't really have the time or interest in participating in the entertainment-related threads. I just sort of stumbled onto this thread.

As one of the "mentioned" in the OP, I feel I should explain my perception of this deal (as if anyone would care...). I have been a bit rough on her lately, admittedly. I started being that way right after she deliberately mis-spelled my screen name (as she did in the OP, BTW). That was the point where I figured she was either totally bereft of common sense, deliberately trying to insult and inflame, or just a troll.

I had never read any of the threads you have all linked, like the cat thing, or the concert abandonment. Now that I glance at them, I am glad I didn't see them sooner; I would most likely have been harsher still.

Although, like Judah, I am offended at not being mentioned. I was clearly one of her strongest adversaries.

You know, in one of her earliest "get to know me" threads, Kyoko referred to herself as (I'm paraphrasing here) "one of the stupident people on Earth, prone to shooting my mouth off when I don't know what I'm talking about."

In this, at least, she was eventually proven correct. lol.gif (656 bytes)

Oh wow -- I'd forgot that one. Actually, here's where I get to don my own gullible hat, because I never suspected that one was false. Of course, that was probably the first post of hers that I'd ever read (I didn't even realise that was her until you said so), so I had no reason to think there was anything more suspect than a person making their family life entirely too complicated (also, I know another Asian girl who has similar family problems who is not a confabulator, so I probably thought it was a cultural thing -- :Cato smacks own hand:)

I thought the whole OP in that thread was so contrived it read like a story from Seventeen (do they still print stories? but I digress). That was the thread that really sounded like classic Drama Queen to me and the one time where IIRC I really questioned her version of events.

Actually I think one of the reasons this thread has gotten so long is so many of us really did have our doubts about Kyoko but were more than generous to her. Even when we stopped responding in her more personal threads we didn't post any "liar liar pants on fire" responses.

She should be glad. I've been on a few message boards that got absolutely brutal when we suspected someone was pulling the Pity Me chain.

This long thread seems to me to be a lot like the end of the Capra classic It's A Wonderful Life, but in reverse. Like Jimmy Stewart's character in the movie, the person who started this thread was largely taken for granted until people realized what life would be like if they were gone. If, instead of what happened at the end of the movie, the whole town of Bedford Falls had shown up at George Bailey's house to let him know how much of a douche-bag they always thought he was, I think the scene would look a lot like this. I only hope that I can get this many people to cheerfully give me the finger on the occasion of my own bulletin board self-immolation.
